Merlin
|
|
Magician who appears with varying characteristics in the Arthurian legends (the variety is due more to inconsistent local traditions than to his own magical skills). His chief role is as adviser to *Arthur and to Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon. It was Merlin's idea that Uther's successor should be revealed by whoever could draw *Excalibur from the stone. In one story the building of Stonehenge is credited to his magic.
