Mentmore Towers
|
|
(13km/8m NE of Aylesbury) House of spectacular Victorian opulence, imitating the prodigy houses of the Elizabethan age and modelled in particular on *Wollaton. It was built 1852–4 by *Paxton for Baron Meyer de Rothschild (1818–74), a great collector who filled it with treasures. In 1878 his only daughter married Lord *Rosebery. Their descendants sold the contents in a famous auction in 1977, after removing the best items to *Dalmeny House. Mentmore itself was bought by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for use as a college of transcendental meditation.
