(stage name of Vivian Hartley, 1913–67) Actress whose distinguished career in the theatre is overshadowed by the fame of her Oscar-winning performance as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939). At the Old Vic and at Stratford-upon-Avon she often acted opposite Laurence Olivier, whom she married in 1940. In 1949 she played Blanche Dubois in the London production of A Streetcar Named Desire, later winning another Oscar for the same role in the film.
