Mayfair
|
|
(London W1) Consistently the most expensive area of residential London since it was first developed in the late 17C. It derives its name from an annual fair held for two weeks in May; this took place, around what is now Curzon Street, from the 1680s until it was closed down in the mid-18C. The area forms a neat rectangle, bounded by four famous thoroughfares – *Piccadilly, *Regent Street, *Oxford Street and *Park Lane.
