(1929-94) The most successful batsman of his generation in English *cricket, playing for *Surrey (1950–63) throughout the period in which they had their unparalleled run of seven consecutive championship victories. His *Test career (1951–61, captain 1955–61) was equally exceptional: he holds the record for the most Tests and the most victories as captain (a total of 41, with 35 in an unbroken sequence and 21 wins).
