(1915–99 kt 1965) The first footballer to be knighted and the first superstar of the game, famous for his long and dazzling dribbles down the right wing followed by a well-placed pass into the centre. He played his first League game for Stoke City in 1931, when he was 16; he then went to Blackpool (1947–61); and finally returned to Stoke, playing his last match for them at the age of 50 in 1965. His skill has been widely seen in the film of the 1953 Cup Final, when Blackpool beat Bolton. He appeared 54 times for England, many of them with Tom *Finney on the other wing.
