(1789–1854) Painter noted for his apocalyptic images, whether on vast canvases or in the mezzotint illustrations to Milton's *Paradise Lost (1827). His best-known works, the three Judgement paintings of scenes from Revelation (1851–3,Tate Gallery), demonstrate the switchback course of his now high reputation. They were valued after his death at £8400 and were sold for £7 in 1935.
