|
|
(2 July 1644) The first major parliamentary victory in the *English Civil War. Thomas *Fairfax and Oliver *Cromwell inflicted a heavy defeat on the army of Prince *Rupert some 11km/7m west of York, thus ending royalist control of the north of England. It was after this battle that Rupert gave Cromwell the nickname Ironside or Ironsides, which was later extended to his troops.
