(Royal Marsden Hospital, London SW3) Founded in 1851 by William Marsden (1796–1867), and occupying from 1862 its present building in the Fulham Road, the original purpose of the Marsden was to offer free admission to those with cancer. It was the world's first hospital specifically for cancer patients, and was from the start in the forefront of cancer research. William Marsden had previously founded the *Royal Free.
