Marble Arch
|
|
(London W1) Designed by John *Nash, and supposedly inspired by the arch of Constantine in Rome, it was put up in 1828 as the entrance to the new *Buckingham Palace. It was moved in 1851 to its present position, at the northeast corner of Hyde Park, serving until 1908 as an entrance for traffic. The reliefs on the north side are by *Westmacott, and on the south by *Baily.
