Mantovani
|
|
(Annunzio Paolo Mantovani, 1905–80) Italian-born conductor, in Britain from the age of 16. His international fame came after World War II, with the formation of an orchestra of 45 players, including 32 strings, to produce his famous sound – the shimmering cascade of 'singing strings'. Charmaine (1951) sold a million copies, the first of a succession of hit singles and albums.
