, known as the Red Devils (Old Trafford, Manchester). Football club founded in 1902, but with origins in a club formed in 1878 by employees of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Its first period of brilliance began with the appointment of Matt *Busby as manager in 1945, but his young team was shattered in the air disaster of 1958. On February 6 their plane crashed on take-off from Munich during the return journey from a match in Belgrade; eight of the players died. Busby built the club up again for a new series of triumphs culminating in the first English win in the European Cup, in 1968, with Bobby Charlton and George Best in the team (and with Denis Law playing until the final, which he missed through injury).
