The Mall
|
|
(London SW1) The capital city's main processional route, providing the first stage of the sovereign's journey either to the Houses of Parliament or to the parade ground at Horse Guards. Stretching from the *Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace to *Admiralty Arch at the other end, it was designed in its present form in 1903–4 by Aston *Webb and was seen as the national memorial to Queen Victoria. But the Mall had first been laid out as a broad avenue in the 1660s, when it immediately became London's most fashionable promenade.
