Malcolm IV
|
|
(known as the Maiden, 1141–65) King of Scotland from 1153. He was only 11 when he succeeded his grandfather, *David I; his father, David's only surviving son, had died the previous year. *Henry II of England took advantage of the king's minority to demand back the northern fiefs of Northumberland and Cumberland, ceded to David I for his support of Henry's mother, *Matilda. Malcolm later served with Henry, campaigning in France. He was succeeded by his brother, *William the Lion (see the *royal house of Scotland).
