Member of the *Commonwealth since 1963. It was formed by the merging of Malaya with the newly independent territories of Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah (previously British North Borneo). In 1965 *Singapore seceded to become an independent state. The federation now consists of 11 states in the Malay peninsula and two states lying some 800km/500m across the sea in north Borneo. These two states, Sarawak and Sabah, themselves surround another member of the Commonwealth, *Brunei. The rulers of the 13 constituent states of the federation elect one of their own number to be head of state for a five-year term.
