The British link with the Malay peninsula began in 1786, when the *East India Company established a port of call on the island of Penang, off the west coast, for vessels plying between India and China. The next major step was the founding of *Singapore off the southern tip of the peninsula in 1819. During the 19C large-scale production of both tin and rubber was developed, while political control was achieved through treaties with the rulers of the separate states of the peninsula. These states together joined the *Commonwealth in 1957 as the independent federation of Malaya, being enlarged in 1963 to become *Malaysia.
