Malawi

Member of the *Commonwealth since 1964, and a republic since 1966. This part of east central Africa was explored by David *Livingstone, who urged missionaries and traders to settle there to undermine the slave trade. The region was proclaimed a British protectorate in 1891 and was named Nyasaland in 1907. It was a part of the Federation of *Rhodesia and Nyasaland before becoming independent in 1964 as Malawi. Hastings Banda (b. 1905) was the first prime minister and was declared president for life in 1971.
