Daily Mail

Britain's first popular newspaper, launched by Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord *Northcliffe) in 1896. Selling for a halfpenny, it was the first paper to be described as *'tabloid'; and with immediate sales of nearly 400,000, the circulation was above a million by 1902. The Mail also engaged in promotional activities of a kind which have since become familiar, offering £1000 for the first cross-Channel flight (won by Blériot in 1909) and £10,000 for the same feat across the Atlantic (won by *Alcock and Brown). The Mail's great rival in the middle of the market has been the *Express; in the early 1990s the Mail was ahead in circulation.
