Now used for any raincoat, the word relates back to the waterproof fabric patented in 1823 by Charles Macintosh (1766–1843). This consisted of two layers of cloth cemented together with rubber dissolved in naphtha. It won immediate favour with passengers travelling on the outside of stage coaches. A raincoat similarly popular with passengers in early motorcars was the *Burberry.
