(1883–1972, kt 1952) Prolific author in many fields, but known above all as a novelist. The semi-autobiographical Sinister Street (2 vols, 1913–14) was long popular as a racy account of the life of the affluent young at Oxford and in London. He is probably best known now for *Whisky Galore (1947), inspired by a wartime incident when he was living on the Hebridean island of Barra.
