David Lean

(1908–91, kt 1984)
Director whose previous skills as cameraman and editor give his films a particular polish. He began, from 1942, with four collaborations with Noel Coward, including *In Which We Serve and *Brief Encounter. These were followed by two Dickens adaptations, *Great Expectations and *Oliver Twist. His later projects were increasingly large-scale and infrequent, but some were very successful – *Bridge on the River Kwai and *Lawrence of Arabia both won Oscars. They were followed by Dr Zhivago (1965), Ryan's Daughter (1970) and A Passage to India (1984).
