Stan Laurel
|
|
(stage name of Arthur Jefferson, 1890–1965) Slapstick comedian who started in the *music hall before joining Fred *Karno's company, with which he visited the USA in 1910. His career there in vaudeville and silent films took off after he teamed up in 1927 with Oliver Hardy (1892–1957). In their anarchic films the errors of the long-suffering Laurel, aggravated by the impatience of Hardy, lead to ever-escalating chaos. There is a Laurel and Hardy museum in Ulverston, the town in Cumbria where Laurel was born.
