(1869–1944, kt 1918) The leading British architect of the early 20C. An important early influence was his friendship with Gertrude *Jekyll, for whom he built Munstead Wood near Godalming in 1896. At that time he was working in a version of English medieval domestic architecture, deriving from the Red House by Philip Webb for William *Morris. He later used a variety of styles for a wide range of commissions. These included New Delhi and the *Cenotaph in Whitehall. A minor masterpiece is *Queen Mary's Dolls' House.
