(16km/10m N of St Albans) House designed by Robert *Adam 1767–74, much altered by *Smirke from about 1815 (adding the *Greek Revival portico), and devastated by fire in 1843. Its present appearance is largely the result of rebuilding in 1903–7 for Julius Wernher (1850–1912), a South African diamond and gold magnate whose magnificent collection of paintings and decorative art can be seen in the house today. The park is by Capability *Brown.
