Lusitania

Launched by *Cunard in 1906 as a sister ship to the *Mauretania. Her fame derives from her tragic end. On 7 May 1915 she was on a regular passenger run from New York to Liverpool (but was also carrying munitions). She was only a few miles off the southern coast of Ireland when she was hit by a torpedo from a German *U-boat; 1198 people were drowned, including 128 US citizens. The disaster was one of the factors influencing the gradual American move away from neutrality in *World War I.
