L.S. Lowry
|
|
(Laurence Stephen Lowry, 1887–1976) Painter who depicted the industrial northwest as a bleak urban landscape in which tiny stick-like figures go in a lonely and detached manner about their business. Born in Manchester, he often painted in the adjacent city of *Salford, which now owns the main collection of his work (displayed from 2000 in an arts centre named after him). Until retirement he painted only in the evenings, having a full-time job in a property company and progressing in his career from rent collector to chief cashier.
