In common usage that part of Scotland which is not the *Highlands, applying to the entire southern region – drained by the rivers Clyde, Forth and Tay – in which by far the greater part of the population lives. The English dialect of this region, known as *Lallans, has provided the idiom of much Scottish poetry.
