(1933) The first novel of Walter Greenwood (1903–74), using his own experience of unemployment in the Lancashire cotton industry as the basis for the fictional troubles of the Hardcastle family and their daughter Sally. It rapidly became established as the classic fictional account of working-class life in the Depression. It was dramatized in 1934 and filmed in 1941, with Deborah Kerr as Sally.
