|
(1618–58) Cavalier soldier and poet, twice imprisoned for his support of the royalist cause. He is remembered in particular for two lyrics: To Althea, From Prison ('Stone walls do not a prison make/ Nor iron bars a cage') and To Lucasta, Going to the Wars ('I could not love thee, Dear, so much,/ Loved I not honour more').
