Bernard Leach

(1887–1979)
Potter who profoundly influenced British ceramics by introducing Japanese skills and styles. He went to Japan in 1909 to teach etching and discovered pottery in 1911 at a tea party, where each of the guests was invited to throw a pot. Returning to Britain in 1920, he established his studio at *St Ives. His work, characterized by sturdy forms, often rough in texture but with subtle glazes, inspired many later potters such as Lucy *Rie. He described his methods in A Potter's Book (1940).
