(1909–90) Violinist and bandleader who established his first band in 1932 at London's Astoria Ballroom. His first big hit was Begin the Beguine (1939) with Chick Henderson as singer; In the Mood (1940) became his signature tune. His band was a favourite choice for private parties given by the royal family at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
