Lorna Doone

Romantic novel by R.D. *Blackmore (Richard Doddridge Blackmore, 1825–1900), set on Exmoor in the 17C and including historical events such as the rebellion of *Monmouth and the assizes of Judge *Jeffreys. The evil Doone clan have murdered the father of young John Ridd. He eventually destroys them, rescuing his beloved Lorna who turns out to be the kidnapped daughter of a noble family. In this violent world she is shot at the altar even as he marries her, but she recovers to live happily ever after.
