Lord's
|
|
(London NW8) The world's best-known *cricket ground, home of the *MCC and of *Middlesex County Cricket Club. It derives its name from Thomas Lord (1755–1832), on whose London pitch (now Dorset Square) the newly formed MCC played from 1787. Lord twice moved his precious turf before laying it in 1814 at the present ground in St John's Wood. Since 1884 a match in every English *Test series has been played at Lord's. The scoreboard in the middle of the Grand Stand is surmounted by a famous weathervane of Father Time.
