(1842) Poems by *Macaulay turning episodes from Roman history into stirring ballads. The best known, Horatius, begins with the resonant verse: Lars Porsena of Clusium By the nine gods he swore That the royal house of Tarquin Should suffer wrongs no more. It goes on to tell how Horatius, gallant captain of the gate, held the bridge over the Tiber to protect Rome against the followers of the deposed house of Tarquin.
