Annual event in the *City of London, dating back to the Middle Ages. Taking place in the Guildhall on a Monday in November, two days after the new Lord Mayor has taken office, it is officially given in honour of his retiring predecessor. But the event has acquired national importance as an occasion on which the prime minister gives a major speech on the theme of Britain's international role and policy.
