Title granted to the mayors of the major cities (the equivalent in Scotland is Lord Provost). Historically the most important among them has been the Lord Mayor of London, where the list goes back to 1192 and includes Dick *Whittington. Although now largely a ceremonial office, the Lord Mayor of London is still head of the corporation which governs the *City of London.
