Lord Chamberlain
|
|
The official in charge of the royal household. Historically he has had another notorious role in British life, as the official censor of the theatre – a task which evolved from his responsibility to provide entertainments for the monarch. Until the Theatres Act of 1968 all play scripts had to be presented to the palace before being performed in public, and playwrights found themselves forced into compromises over phrases or incidents deemed unacceptable.
