Long Melford
|
|
(45km/28m W of Ipswich) A Suffolk town which grew rich from wool. Its name reflects its famous main street, some 3km/2m long. The 15C church of the Holy Trinity has excellent contemporary stained glass in the aisles and fine monuments in the Clopton Chantry. In the chancel there is an alabaster effigy to William Cordell (d. 1581), speaker of the House of Commons, who built the nearby turreted redbrick mansion, Melford Hall.
