Central organization of a large number of semi-independent colleges in and around London. It was established in 1836 for the purposes of conducting examinations; by then *University College and *King's College were already in existence. The university's first offices were in Somerset House; from 1869 it was in the building which subsequently became the *Museum of Mankind; and in 1936 it moved to its present Senate House in Bloomsbury.
