London Symphonies
|
|
The last 12 symphonies of Joseph Haydn, commissioned by Johann Peter Salomon (1745–1815) and first performed in London. Salomon, a German-born violinist, settled in London in 1781 and soon became the capital's leading musical impresario. He travelled to Vienna in 1790 to persuade Haydn to make the journey to London. The composer made two visits, in 1791–2 and 1794–5, and was fêted in Britain as never before. The symphonies are also known as the Salomon Symphonies, the term London Symphony sometimes being reserved, for no very good reason, for the last of the 12 (no. 104).
