(LPO) The second orchestra founded with his own funds by *Beecham, established by him in 1932 (it is said in a fit of pique that the direction of the new BBC Symphony Orchestra had been given to Adrian Boult). Beecham's ownership of the orchestra ended with a financial crisis in 1939, after which it became a players' cooperative. In 1950 the musicians invited Boult to become principal conductor (1951–7), and others of great distinction in that role have been John Pritchard (1961–6), Bernard Haitink (1967–79) and Georg Solti (1979–83). The LPO was selected as the first resident orchestra at the Festival Hall, taking effect from the 1992–3 season.
