London Library

|
(London SW1) Britain's largest and most distinguished private library, open to anyone on payment of a subscription. It was launched in 1840, with Thomas Carlyle as the most energetic of its founders. Since then the library has bought all books of any significance published in English (other than specialist works in science and law), together with many in foreign languages, to form a working collection of well over a million volumes.
