Lloyd's Register
|
|
of Shipping A published classification of ships according to their method of construction. The first Register was compiled by underwriters at Edward Lloyd's *coffee house in 1760. The third edition (1775) introduced the rating of ships by a letter for the condition of the hull and a number for the standard of equipment; A1, which has entered the language as a general phrase for excellence, was therefore the highest grade. Although Lloyd's Register has always been closely linked with *Lloyd's of London, it is published by a separate organization.
