(stage name of Matilda Wood, 1879–1922) Perhaps the greatest of all *music-hall stars. Her speciality was warm-hearted songs about everyday life, made saucy with the help of her famous wink (or sometimes even without it – She'd never had her ticket punched before was one of her early numbers). The favourites in her repertoire were A little of what you fancy does you good, Oh, Mr Porter, in her last years One of the ruins that Cromwell knocked about a bit – and, above all, Don't dilly-dally on the way.
