Llangollen

|
(43km/27m NW of Shrewsbury) Town in Clwyd on the river Dee, where the International Music *Eisteddfod has been held in July since 1947. The Llangollen Steam Railway is a short section of line, closed in 1968 and restored by enthusiasts from the late 1970s – the 3km/2m to Berwyn was opened first, with plans to extend it the 16km/10m to Corwen. The 'Ladies of Llangollen' were two eccentric Irishwomen, Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who lived for half a century from 1779 in Plas Newydd, a house just southeast of the town, where they received many distinguished literary visitors. It was they who gave the house its neo-Gothic character; the black-and-white timbering was added later.
