(4000 in 1991) Fashionable spa in the 19C, now the administrative centre of Powys. It was known for its medicinal springs from the 17C, but only developed with the arrival of the railway. The Roman fort known as Castell Collen was nearby to the northwest, and there are finds from there in the local museum.
