Lizard

Peninsula in Cornwall with spectacular coastal scenery, the tip of which (Lizard Point) is the most southerly part of the British mainland. It has been particularly associated with communications. From Poldhu, on the west coast, *Marconi's equipment transmitted in 1901 the first transatlantic radio signal. And on Goonhilly Downs, in the centre of the promontory, stands the Earth Station, the Post Office's main installation for receiving and transmitting signals bounced off satellites. In 1962 the station received and broadcast the first live translantic TV progamme, via the Telstar satellite.
