(b. 1914) Founder in 1945 of Theatre Workshop, a touring company for working-class audiences which in 1953 settled in the Theatre Royal, Stratford (in the east end of London). There she developed an improvisational style of theatre which bore fruit in highly successful productions such as *Oh What A Lovely War.
