The national list of buildings of architectural importance, approved until 1992 by the secretary of state for the Environment (subsequently by the secretary of state for National Heritage). It includes all which survive relatively unaltered from before 1700; most such buildings up to 1840; and buildings of character and quality, or by significant architects, up to modern times. About 1% of these are given a special status as Grade 1; the rest are Grade 2, though an asterisk is added to the most important within this group (known as 'Grade two star'). Other grades are now obsolete. Special consent is required from the local authority for any alteration to a listed building.
