Linear B

The script of an early form of Greek used on *Crete and in southern Greece in about 1300 BC, which remained a mystery until deciphered by a British architect, Michael Ventris (1922–56). He had been intrigued by the challenge since the age of 14, when he heard Sir Arthur *Evans lecture on the clay tablets from *Knossos. He announced his discovery on a BBC radio programme in 1952. An earlier Cretan script, known as Linear A, is still undeciphered.
